On Sunday morning the bells in the tower ring out across the
village calling everyone to worship at a place that had its
beginnings as a Roman Watch Tower. The existence of the church
is first documented in 1170. In 1609 the building was
transformed for worship with another renovation in 1785. In 1936
the choir area was partially remodeled and then, just before the
turn of the century, the structure underwent a complete
restoration.
Today the church looks much as it did when William attended
worship services with
his family in the 1870's. And when William left
for the new world, the sight of the church tower slowly hiding
behind a hill would be his last glimpse of Nöttingen. |
